Now that you've become familiar with several tools to identify objects in the night sky, see if your team can use those tools to learn to find your way around the sky without a map. If your lab is not scheduled at night or the weather is cloudy, your team can do the Finder Chart exercise below instead.


Making a Finder Chart

Suppose you want to look at a planet in the night sky tonight. Using whatever tools you need, find a planet that will be up in the sky tonight. In addition, figure out the best time to observe the object, which is usually when the planet is at its highest point in the sky. Use Stellarium to make aаfinder chartаon your worksheet so that you can locate the planet by using other stars and objects in the sky.
